Customer Reviews
Happy grillin' (2010-08-05)
Excellent start feature, no more lighter fluid only the compact propane tank. Nice work surface, looks great cleans easy. Prefer charcoal taste but now have the convience of one push starter. The only challenge is no adjustment up and down with respect to the flame. Doesn't seem to cause a problem, you can move the heat in and out from the center, but not up and down which is more common with other grills. Have used all summer, dozens of times with great sucess, I highly recommend to charcoal flavor lovers.
Best grill on the market (2010-07-29)
I did a ton of research and a ton of reading on both amazon and other bbq websites. This grill is hands-down the best on the market. I have owned probably 8 grills in my years, and this is the best combination of all of them. Previous to this, I had a dedicated offset smoker, and a Weber gas grill. I was planning to get this to replace the gas grill, but have since sold my smoker as this grill does BETTER THAN ANY SMOKER I'VE USED (3). With the Smokenator option (search 'smokenator' on amazon for the best price) you can get an insert that just drops into your grill and will make the best ribs, pulled pork, turkey etc...
The grill came quickly, without scratches or damage whatsoever. Some other reviews said the Weber Golds were a better option, but being able to stash my charcoal and tools (and the smokenator when not in use) in the bin is awesome. Just leaves your patio/deck clean and efficient. If you've never had a 'table' to use next to your grill, as this one has, you don't know what you're missing. No more holding plates or dishes dishes while trying to load/offload your food, while balancing a beer and trying not to drop stuff - it is invaluable.
I've never written an amazon review before, but felt compelled to let others know that after all my research, this bbq blows any other away. And as always - Weber is super-high quality. Even if you choose to go with another model, DO NOT LOOK AT ANY OTHER BRAND OTHER THAN WEBER - THEY WILL NOT LET YOU DOWN.
i love my weber. (2010-07-29)
Yes any kettle grill from weber will cook exactly the same. BUT i wanted the extras that the performer has to offer. i am so glad i bought this. i found it to be very simple to assemble, all the parts were in the box and in great shape. i have a weber gas grill and love it but missed the smokey flavors. i've never been disappointed buy weber.
Pricey But Nice! (2010-07-21)
When my wife saw this Weber in a local ad, she wanted it. We bought it, instead through Amazon, who unlike the brick and mortar store, had it in stock. Thank you Amazon.
Pricey---when you consider that the basic Weber sells for around $90.00, the $329.00 for this unit seems more than a bit high. But, if you're already a Weber fan, this is the ultimate model.
First, assembly is a breeze. It is so simple, all they have is a series of drawings that clearly show how it's supposed to go together----however, do use the instructions or you might not get it right. All parts were there and I only had to slightly bend one metal part so that the screw holes aligned. The materials used are of excellent quality.
Features---the ring bar on the side is for holding the lid when you access the grill area---and unlike the old hook, it works very well. ---the tilt out bin easily holds a 20 pound bag of charcoal, as advertised. ----the "one touch" method of cleaning out ashes and the ash collector worked very well.
---the propane and pezo starter are really neat. At first, I thought, who needs it. We've always used an electric starter and we know of many people who love the chiminney starter. But this is totally cool. I bought two large containers of propane for $5.00 and hooked one up. Turned on the gas and pushed the starter button and it fired right off. It took less than a minute to light the edges of the charcoal, so the amount of gas used was minimal.
---The unit, as with other Webers, cooks like a charm. BTW--it also includes two side bins for indirect cooking (normally an accessory you have to purchase).
The only negative comment I have is the tool holder. It only has three hooks and for some of our tools, these were too wide for the handle ring. And when you consider the number of tools you may have, three hooks are just not enough. However the good news is, you can take one of their regular tool hangers (normally designed to hook over the lip of the kettle) and hang it from the center of the ring that holds the lid on the side. Locating the holder there doesn't interfere with the lid. All you have to do is bend the tabs with a pair of pliers to keep the holder in place.
Otherwise---a great unit.
Good But Some Complaints (2010-07-11)
It perfectly fits 2 St. Louis cut pork ribs. The table is obviously useful but so is the rack below. The basket is a useless waste of space.
Minor complaint: The screws go in holes on top of the table. It made is harder to clean whatever you spill into the holes.
Minor complaint: The lid holder keeps the lid too close to the grill. It doesn't allow you to reach into the charcoal basket next to the holder. I just put the lid on the ground.
Moderate complaint: The propane lighter requires the charcoal basket to be in the center. That's fine except when you're indirect grilling and you want to add more coals later. In that case, you need a chimney starter. I don't mind using a chimney starter but if you're paying for a propane lighter, you'd expect to be able to light more than one batch.
Major complaint: They moved the thermometer! The new models have the thermometer on the side rather than on the handle. If you're indirect grilling with the lid holes over the food, the thermometer gives you the temperature of the direct heat right above the coal basket which is useless. When comparing grills, consider the thermometers on the new Webers to be useless.
