Good little grIll (2010-07-09)
Got this grill after moving to a smaller place. Sold large Ducane and bought this grill and have used now for a month and works great since I am not cooking for more than four people at a time. I added the grill grates and now have the optimum cooking grill. It is small, easy to move and saved my old LP bottle and it fits under cart I bought also from Amazon. If you are looking for small good grill, BUY!!!!!
Perfect for a family of two or small balconies/patios (2010-07-08)
Before anyone gets confused about this review - let's go through again what makes the Weber Q series (100 and 200) stand out from the rest of the stationary and gas grills.
a) It's portable because of it's relatively small size
b) It can also be stationary because of the cart
c) You can use either 1 lb propane tanks or 20 lb tanks (with an adapter that you purchase separately)
d) The after-market accessories are pretty cool
e) Heating capabilities (to be discussed in depth)
Categorically speaking:
Size: 4 out of 5
I have the Weber Q 120 grill, which is identical to the 100 grill, but for the two little plastic arms on the side. The arms aren't super huge, but they will hold a standard dinner plate that you have ready to go piled high with food or condiments. They will also comfortably fit a cell phone and a beer; cell phone for the timer of what you're cooking, and beer to keep you company. Now - realistically speaking - it's great to cook for two. For example, I had two (2) 1/4 pound burger patties on the grill, with 6 Miller High Life Brats (yes, I know they're low class, but they're good on a hot summer day) surrounding it. No problem (see my pics) with this setup. But if you want to add corn, or bacon, or onions, then you'll probably have to cook in shifts (again, see my pics). An extra 20 - 30 square inches would have helped my cause, but the utility versus price would not have been worth it. Oh yes - it's highly portable too. I had no problem picking it up by itself and taking it from room to room before its final resting spot on the cart. The 20 lb propane tank was much heavier. As an aside, assembly took about 10 minutes on the grill.
Stationary Ability: 4 out of 5
Want to set it on the ground? No worries. Want to put it on the rolling cart? No problem either. I would just caution that the rolling cart can't support the 20 lb tank on that bottom wire/mesh shelf.
Propane Tank Size: 5 out of 5
Does it take 1 lb propane tanks? Yes sir. Does it take 20 pound propane tanks? Absolutely. Don't forget to purchase an adapter hose, and IF you have rodents who like to chew, make sure you get a stainless steel one. I was fine with the knockoff brand "Transport" or "Sansport". Actually, I think it is called the "Stansport". 20 bucks, free shipping with prime. It IS plastic/rubber, so be mindful of that if you have rodents or wildlife.
Aftermarket Accessories: 5 out of 5
Just do a search for "Weber accessories" and the list you'll get is pretty amazing. The one thing I might get in the future is the handle LED light for night time grilling as our hi-rise apartment balcony light isn't that strong. Luckily I had a grilling tool set already, but there are some neat things that are Weber specific. By the way, you CAN use wood chips on the 100 series. Just be careful to wrap them in foil (with holes in the foil) farthest away from the heat.
Heating Capabilities: 4 out of 5
Ok...if you're looking for a portable grill with more than one burner, you are either looking at a Coleman (which does have its merits) or you're dreaming. The burner on this guy is an oval shaped ring - the grate has perforations throughout most of it, but does have some solid parts for more indirect heat. I don't know what the heat output is rated at - I do know that it took me about 2 - 3 minutes longer to cook a burger medium well on this grill than a full size Charbroil gas grill with 3 burners. Am I going to really suffer at the hands of the 2 - 3 minutes? Absolutely not. Like I said earlier - just be aware that this is great for two people or for very limited spaces (including tailgating). There's no thermometer on the 100 series, so you know what? Light that baby up, keep it on high, and put the lid on for 10 - 12 minutes. After that, I'd venture to say that if your recipe calls for "medium low" heat, you put it at "medium" and so on and so forth. I was able to grill corn in husk just fine, I was able to make burgers just fine, and although I suspect that I won't be able to sear steaks like I could if I had an infrared grill, I'll probably get by just by setting the sucker to high, and coating it with just a little light layer of black pepper.
Overall: 5 out of 5.
Very happy with the purchase. It comes with 2 drip pans, so if you forget to get these with your order, no worries till a few days later. I would highly recommend the rolling cart, because a)it takes pressure off of your back so you're not leaned over all the time, and b)it serves as this luggage cart with a handle so you can tow it like a suit case. Nifty for tailgates. But above all, if you decide to go with a 20lb tank, make sure that the adapter you get is animal chew proof (or at least resistant).
Great little Grill! (2010-07-02)
The Weber Q grills are made well and do a very good job of cooking for 2 to 4 people. I have a Weber Genesis Silver C from 2000 and bought the Q for smaller grilling jobs. I bought the Q120 model because I only wanted the smaller sized Q100 series, but I liked having the 2 small flip out side tables. I have absolutely no negatives to say on this grill, and it looks like it should last a very long time. I use it with the Weber fold up portable cart that I purchased at the same time as the grill. If this was my only grill, I may have bought the larger Q200 or even Q300 instead of this one, but I am not even sure about that. This is really wonderful! Other reviewers have said all the great things about this unit already, and I agree with all of them. Some cons mentioned by others are their opinions, which we are all entitled to.
Awesome little grill (2010-06-14)
I bought this grill for my balcony and it fits just perfectly. The design is very well done and in particular the cast iron grate which gets hot in around 10 minutes and you are ready to grill!
I would definitely recommend it.
