Raw-some (2010-09-06)
This grill is so gangster. You can slang up some chicken in no time on it.
I put it together by myself. It's really built well. Everything is cast aluminum, powder coated steel or stainless steel. This thing should last 10 years plus. I remember the manual says the warranty on the cast aluminum parts were 25 years.
Sweet grill (2010-07-25)
I got this grill over a year ago after reading tons of reviews of the Genesis and other grills. I'm very happy I didn't get a cheaper brand. This is an excellent grill, though it's not perfect. I have no complaints about its durability. Most cheap grills don't even last more than 16 months in my climate, this one shows no signs of deterioration after a year. It works so well, I now grill out about 3X as often as I did with crummy grills.
I bought it with the cast iron grill surface which I highly recommend. The internal drip pans are very well designed and easy to clean. Vastly superior to other grills I've owned. The heavy lid and cast iron grill surface hold the heat very well.
The worst part is how the big knobs cover so much of the working surface. The built-in propane tank scale is vaguely useful, but it's not accurate enough to know how close to empty you are. You'll have to weigh the tank on a scale if you want to run close to empty. I recently discovered that U-Haul stores refill tanks and charge by the gallon. It saves money and I no longer have to run down near empty and risk ruining the meal.
Beware of Shipping, assembly (2010-07-22)
I have another Weber at another location so the product can't be beat.
Local stores were all out of green with a side burner so I decided on Amazon.
Before knocking the shipping process, let me say that the product got here on the day Amazon said at the time of order, and it was in perfect condition....no dings on the outer packaging even.
The issue comes about because this product gets shipped freight.....shipping weight is listed as 230 lbs. The shippers were ABF and Land Air. Not exactly the household names of UPS and Fedex. The shipper is supposed to call ahead to arrange a date and time for delivery with you. Which is a very good thing because ultimately it came on a 48' trailer (as in tractor/trailer). I live in a rural area and that vehicle would still be here if it ever tried to pull in.
I ordered the grill late on a Wednesday and by Friday am it arrived at a depot 60 miles down the highway from me. All this according to the tracking number Amazon provided. I even called the depot and asked if I could pick it up. They said sure, but you'd have to get here before 9 or after 6. So that someone could be there to help load it.
I chose to wait for the Amazon delivery date, which was the following Wednesday. On Monday the tracking system said it was "Out for Delivery". And I had not received a phone call. When I called the depot again they said Oh, it has been transferred to another freight shipper, Lasnd Air Express. I figured they were going to deliver and I had not had a call so I panicked and called Land Air. I also emailed Amazon and they were helpful, though it was a 24 hr cycle to get info from them.
And Land Air Express has no tracking into Amazon. Turns out that Land Air Express makes the pickup from ABF one day (Monday) and then didn't have a truck to my area until 2 days later (Wednesday)so I eventually arranged with them to meet up in an area where a large truck could turn around and all was well.
Good title for this review might have been "the devil is in the details". If I had known all of the above--as in info from Amazon---I would have stressed out a lot less.
Assembly notes:
#1. Don't lose any screws or washers. They do not give you one single extra one.
#2. Grill went together pretty well....better fits than with a lot of foreign assembly jobs.
#3. It took me 3 hours to assemble. And I have a Masters in Mechanical Engineering and pretty decent mechanical aptitude.
Oh, and another 2 hours and $4 collecting and collapsing all the packaging material and hauling it to my local transfer/recyling center.
conclusion: Buy local. My Ace could have had it shipped to them in 2 days and then charged me $40 to assemble it. Avoiding the shipping and assembly hassle would have been a great decision.....best $40 I would have spent in a long time.
only one disappointment (2010-07-09)
the side burner adjustment doesn't allow for a low simmer. other than that, great grill.
